What a registered agent does
The registered agent (some states say statutory agent or resident agent) is the person or company with a physical address in the state who receives legal papers and state mail for the business. The name and address go on the formation filing and on a foreign LLC's application for authority. A paid service lists its address in place of the owner's; the yearly fee covers that address and the forwarding of what arrives at it.
State fees tied to the agent
A few states charge a fee for the agent designation itself. Florida adds a $25 registered agent fee to a foreign LLC's $100 application and a $35 registered agent designation to a corporation's $35 filing. Connecticut's $120 certificate of organization includes the appointment of a statutory agent. Mississippi charges $10 per company to change a registered agent address. In Tennessee an extra $20 is due with the corporation annual report if the registered agent or registered office changes. In Arizona, if the statutory agent's address is outside Maricopa or Pima county, the LLC's notice must be published in a newspaper.
How the yearly fee compares with the state's own fees
At the listed prices a paid agent costs more each year than the state report fee in most states: 33 states charge an LLC $60 or less a year in report fees and flat taxes, and 11 charge nothing. Over five years an agent at $99 a year is $495 and one at $200 a year is $1,000, against a five-year state cost of $35 in Montana and $4,130 in California. The calculator adds an agent fee to any state's total; every state's own fees are in the Rank table.

Is there a state fee for naming a registered agent?
Usually it is part of the filing fee. Florida charges a separate $25 registered agent fee with a foreign LLC application and $35 with a corporation filing; Connecticut's $120 LLC filing includes the statutory agent appointment.

Mississippi charges $10 per company to change a registered agent address. Tennessee adds $20 to the corporation annual report when the registered agent or office changes.
Does a foreign LLC need a registered agent in the new state?
Yes. The application for authority names an agent with an address in the new state; Florida's statute requires the agent's name, street address in Florida and written acceptance.
